How I came to choose the crime genre

After previously being confused as to which genre my opening film should be, to give me a clearer idea, I decided to cut down the genres I would not like to do. I decided against a romance, comedy and science fiction opening film. This is due to the difficulties I believe I would find doing an opening scene with these three scenes. For example, for a science fiction film to be successful, one has to include computer-generated imagery, which I believe would be hard to do, especially with a limited budget. This method helped me ultimately decide that I would like to do an opening film sequence on the genre of crime, it being a genre I have a profound interest in and also a genre that can have many different avenues to explore.

A crime film often involves many of Roland Barthes' enigma codes, a mystery needing to be solved and the protagonist being tasked with solving it. Crime genres are more specifically dominated by the Hermeneutic Code because they rely heavily on the viewer's desire to learn the answer to the question or the plot. For example, in the popular "Line of Duty" series, which entails a crime within the police force that an anti-corruption unit have to solve, the audience are lured in as they ask questions as to why this event of corruption took place within the police force and then the protagonist, the anti-corruption police officer, gradually resolves the matter, thus also resolving the Hermeneutic Code.
