Primarily, without a doubt, my film is relatable enough and covers topics broad enough to entertain any audience above the age of forty, the middle-aged and elderly generations often being disinterested in films such as mine. However, despite this I have purposely made my opening film an appealing media text for many different people with the intention that I would hypothetically earn more money and become more popular and successful.
Despite this, I will be focusing on aiming my opening film at the younger generations of the population, in particular adolescents. Teenagers are more engaged in films such as mine, and with my protagonist being a sixteen year old, it is easier for teenagers to relate to him. My target audience is mainly teenagers or young adults, having previously an age rating of 15, due to the violence demonstrated in the film, the act of pickpocketing being very pivotal in the film. However, I believed that my film could also even target a younger audience, and now it is targeting an age rating of 12 because it does not have any inappropriate language in it and as it does not have too much violence. Having an age rating of 12 would allow me to ultimately be more of a success and logically more people could watch it.
As I have previously stated, for me it is very important to reach a wide range of ages with my opening film and therefore I want this film to be suitable for young teenagers to be able to watch with their parents. Not only does this mean that more young teenagers are able to watch it but it also means that parents are able to watch it too, the older generations, the 40-60 year olds, which would make it more popular across the older age groups.
The target audience for a crime thriller is typically predominantly males due to the fact that the genre is known to be more interesting to them and that the protagonist is usually a male too, as in my case as well. However, despite my protagonist being a male, I do not want this to stop the other gender from watching this film as I believe that it is still an interesting film for women, to watch regardless of their gender. I believe that gender does not play a significant role in determining who is most targeted as an audience because nowadays, just because you are of a certain gender, it does not necessarily mean the interest within that gender is exactly the same.
As for ethnicity, just like for gender, I do not believe it plays a very big role in my film and I am convinced that anyone, no matter their race or religious beliefs, would be interested and attracted to watching my 2 minute opening film. This is because I deal with the problem of poverty, and poverty does not differentiate between the numerous races, and is a universal problem therefore anyone could understand the difficulty my character, Billy Burke, finds in getting by in life and making a living for himself.
Lastly, or class, I would be aiming towards the working and middle classes, however, truthfully the higher classes would enjoy this film too. Class is not a very big factor and does not mean too much in my opinion.
